We are extremely pleased to announce that the International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ) has selected Lisa L. Davis to become Executive Director following the long tenure of Joan D. Winship, who will be retiring June 30th.
Lisa Davis is a lawyer with an advanced degree in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University Law Center. She has devoted her 20-year career to advancing human rights and the rule of law. She has traveled extensively and worked with judges, lawyers, government officials and NGOs around the world on important issues of concern to IAWJ members, including gender equality, violence against women and access to justice. Lisa comes to IAWJ from an established senior position at Freedom House, a well-respected democracy and human rights NGO based in Washington DC.
The unanimous decision was made at the annual meeting of the IAWJ Board of Directors held this year in the Philippines. It adopted the recommendation of the IAWJ Board of Managerial Trustees, which conducted an intensive inquiry into a number of applicants who responded to a broad-based search. Among the highly qualified applicants, Lisa stood out as the person to lead IAWJ forward with new programming, increase communication and engagement with members, and build resources that will provide a secure foundation for the future.
In Lisa’s words: “Having witnessed the justice systems in over 30 countries and personally worked to promote rights through law reform and courts, I believe that IAWJ possesses something very special: a uniquely powerful mission and an influential membership that can definitively bring about equality and fairness for women and girls. I am thrilled to become a part of such a transformative international group and join IAWJ’s leadership in its 25th year.”
Even as we are sad to say good-by to Joan, we extend a warm welcome to Lisa. We look forward to her leadership, energy and ideas.
With our warmest wishes and hoping to greet you at IAWJ’s 2016 biennial conference in Washington DC, May 26-29, 2016.
